There is a difference between modular homes and manufactured homes, many do not realize this; modular homes are built at the factory in sections then shipped to where ever one so desires. A manufactured home is also built at the factory but there are a few more items that are involved. They must conform to the Federal Building Codes of each state which many know as HUD. Others claim the Best manufactured Homes are built by Clayton Homes. James L Clayton and his brother Kevin built their first manufactured home site in 1971 and as they say the rest is history. In 1987 Clayton Homes opened the first manufactured home community in Texas. James Clayton was quite an entrepreneur in his day, born in 1934 he lived with his family in a tin roofed home with not electricity or plumbing. He had his own cotton patch when he was twelve and after graduating from high school he thought he would be a singer and moved to Memphis Tennessee.

Like Palm Harbor Manufactured Homes, Clayton Homes are built at the factory and has many floor plans to choose from. One thing about Clayton homes as they have a manufactured home that is eco friendly; it is called the IHouse. They are so proud of this home the tout that it costs about a dollar a year to heat and has energy efficient appliances, thicker walls than normal extreme insulation, and they even have a rainwater catching system. They feel that this house will be about ten percent of their overall sales within the next ten years. Although very expensive, starting at about one hundred and forty thousand dollars, the iHouse they are starting to be seen all over the United States.
